Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma)

Jalen Hurts was one of the big winners at the quarterback position. While anticipation and processing were his bugaboos on film, he showed teams that he indeed has NFL arm talent. He looked more natural as a thrower than Justin Herbert did at times, and likely earned himself a few more fans in NFL front offices with his strong showing in the throwing drills. Hurts remains a raw developmental pick, but with a couple years sitting behind, and learning from an established starter, especially one with a similar skill set, Hurts could find himself ready for prime time by the end of his rookie contract. The NFL is a copycat league, and Lamar Jackon’s success could potentially prompt teams to feel that Hurts may offer a similar dynamic.

Jordan Love (Utah State)

Jordan Love has generated the most buzz at this year’s NFL Combine. It is likely that most NFL teams already viewed Love as a potential top 10 pick, but the media has been slow to accept that. That seems to have changed as the NFL world converged on Indianapolis, especially with how good Jordan Love looked in the workouts. He looked as good as anyone would have hoped, and confirmed that he may indeed have more long-term upside than Justin Herbert. He certainly has more arm talent. The Patrick Mahomes comparison gets bandied about because of Love’s ability to throw off platform (without his feet set) and on the run, but his game is more reminiscent of Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Unlike Herbert, Love is not ready to start right away, but he does have a higher potential ceiling. Herbert is still expected to come off the board first, but do not be surprised if Love continues to get love as the superior prospect as we head toward draft day.
