The Cowboys double-dip in the secondary in the second round with a name that should be familiar to most NFL fans.

Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield, Jr., son of former Bills and Vikings standout Antoine Winfield, could be a good second-round target at safety for the Cowboys if they determine the price on players like Grant Delpit and Xavier McKinney to be too steep.

A Texas native, Winfield Jr. battled through injuries in his first two seasons with the Golden Gophers but broke out in 2019 with a stellar campaign. He led the team in tackles with 88 and tied the school’s single-season record for interceptions with seven.

He won’t wow from an athleticism or measurables standpoint, but Winfield can make up for some of these deficiencies as a fearless and extremely instinctual player. To be fair, it probably helps that he’s been watching NFL game film since he was 11 years old.

New defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist had an up-close look at Winfield Jr.’s game as part of P.J. Fleck’s staff in 2017, and could serve as a good intel pipeline for the Cowboys as a result. If his 2019 season is any indication, Winfield Jr.’s best football could be ahead of him. Medicals will be critical to where he ends up being drafted, but Dallas could hit big in the second round if he can stay healthy.
