Robby Anderson rumors: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
2. New York Jets
Sometimes the best fit for a free agent is simply a reunion with his old team. The Jets need talent everywhere, and retaining Robby Anderson makes a ton of sense for them.
Anderson developed some strong chemistry with Sam Darnold towards the end of the season, which helped the second-year quarterback play better. The Jets also saw Anderson expand his route tree, making more contested catches over the middle as opposed to simply winning on fly routes with his speed.
Darnold is entering a critical third year of his development, and the last thing the Jets can afford is for him to take a step back. Losing Anderson, the receiver he is most comfortable throwing to certainly increases that risk.
The dilemma that Jets’ GM Joe Douglas faces is needing to rebuild his offensive line and add several pieces on defense, making a huge deal for Anderson an impediment. Anderson appears unwilling to offer a hometown discount, hoping to strike while the iron is hot in free agency.
The Jets will likely let Anderson test the market, and if he gets a huge deal move on. That wouldn’t be the smartest move, but their overall needs may dictate a more conservative approach at receiver.
