Should the Chiefs sign Dez Bryant in free agency?

As he tries to make a comeback again, should the Kansas City Chiefs sign Dez Bryant on a cheap deal?

Dez Bryant was once of the best wide receivers in the NFL. However, injuries led to a decline over his last few years with the Dallas Cowboys, and an attempt to latch on with the New Orleans Saints in 2018 ended with a torn Achilles’ in his second practice.

Bryant suggested last August he would try to get “back in the league” around mid-October, but that did not come to fruition and spent last season out of business. Yet it appears he has not given up on a comeback, as he has spent time working out in Texas with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Additionally, Bryant is apparently set to workout soon with another Chiefs’ player, wide receiver Mecole Hardman.

Working out with Mahomes and Hardman will give two Chiefs’ players an up close look at him, and provide two potential advocates in Kansas City’s “room.”

But should the Chiefs sign Bryant?

Again, Bryant hasn’t played in two seasons. While he played all 16 games for Dallas in 2017, his production was solid (69 receptions for 838 yards and six touchdowns). In the two prior seasons, he missed 10 games. Some time away may have been good for him physically, apart from rehabbing his Achilles, and he’s still only going to turn 32 in November.

Signing Bryant to a contract that guarantees him little or nothing, beyond an opportunity in OTAs and perhaps training camp, is a palatable move for only a select number of teams. The list of teams he’d want to sign with is probably narrow as well.

The Chiefs have one of the NFL’s best offenses, if not the best. So they are in a position where they can take some calculated risks on the margins of the depth chart, and lose nothing if it doesn’t work out.

Bringing Bryant aboard is the kind of low-risk move the Chiefs could make.
