17th Overall: Dallas Cowboys – Grant Delpit (S – LSU)

Team Needs
Cornerback, Sfety, Edge, Defensive Tackle, Guard, Wide Receiver

Picks: 17 (1st), 51 (2nd), 82 (3rd), 123 (4th), 156 (5th), 232 (7th)

The Dallas Cowboys have a few major needs, but with free agency yet to begin, the safety position is likely the direction the Cowboys will go here. Xavier McKinney is also a great option, especially if Grant Delpit is already off the board, but the LSU safety may be the preferred prospect for the majority of NFL teams. Delpit is a hard hitter with a nose for the football who should fit seamlessly into the Cowboys defensive scheme. He is simply too good of a prospect to pass up this late in the draft, especially when one considers the Cowboys on and off dalliance with safeties Earl Thomas and Jamal Adams. Dallas has six picks to work with, and will look to address corner and the defensive line on day two, before turning their attention to guard and wide receiver on day three.

Team Impact

The Cowboys have had a need at safety since Barry Church left the team in the offseason of 2017. Delpit gives them a high upside long term starter with Pro Bowl potential. His physical style of play will help energize a defense that shows too much inconsistency for their talent level. Corner is also a big need with Byron Jones likely on his way out of the door, but there will be numerous day one talents at corner still left in the second and third rounds.

Fantasy Impact

Grant Delpit projects as an immediate S2 and DB2 candidate. He will be one of the more talented safeties in the league upon his arrival in Dallas, but play calling will help determine his weekly upside. If they let him be aggressive on and around the line of scrimmage, he has S1 and DB1 upside. If they choose to keep him patrolling the back end for the majority of his snaps, he will be more of a DB2 than a weekly DB1 threat.
