2nd Overall: Washington – Chase Young (Edge – Ohio State)

Team Needs
Wide Receiver, Cornerback, Offensive Line, Tight End, Linebacker

Picks: 2 (1st), 66 (3rd), 108 (4th), 142 (4th), 149 (5th), 217 (7th), 230 (7th)

Chase Young is the top talent in the entire 2020 NFL Draft class. Depending on who you ask, Nick Bosa’s former teammate has significantly more raw talent than the 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. A once in a generation talent, Washington will be giddy to pair Young with Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Matt Ioannidis. Young’s addition will give Washington a playoff caliber defense up front. Washington needs to add some cornerback help, but Okudah being drafted before Young would be a complete and utter shock. With that being said, Washington is likely already looking at trade down options, as collecting more draft picks would help to address some of the many holes they have on the roster. There has been some smoke suggesting that they would legitimately consider drafting Tua Tagovailoa here, but that was probably put in the media by the team in hopes of drumming on a bidding war for their second overall pick. Dwayne Haskins is not anywhere close to as talented as Tua, but he has a future in the NFL as a starter.

Team Impact

Adding Chase Young will give Washington one of the most talented defensive lines in the NFL. They have bigger needs at many other positions, but when you already have a potential franchise quarterback on your roster, you take the best player available if you are picking at second overall. Young is the most talented player in this draft class, and will strike fear into the hearts of opposing defenses from the second he steps foot onto an NFL field as a rookie. Washington will need to make some shrewd moves at corner after letting Josh Norman go, but they are expected to be players for names like James Bradberry in free agency. Young is the right move as he will instantly be the most talented player on Washington’s roster, and possibly on the defensive side of the NFC East altogether.

Fantasy Impact

Chase Young will be an instant DE1 in both redraft and dynasty leagues. Young will be a force immediately, and will be paying on a talented enough defensive line that teams will not be able to double team him on every play. He will be the favorite for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award as a rookie and will be a threat for double digit sacks on an annual basis. Young is worth consideration as soon as the mid second round in IDP heavy dynasty rookie drafts. He should be one of the first 15-20 defensive ends off the board in redraft leagues.
