6th Overall: Los Angeles Chargers – Justin Herbert (QB – Oregon)

Expected to be one of the first two quarterbacks off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft coming into the season, Herbert’s uneven senior season left some question marks regarding both his upside and his floor. The Chargers have officially moved on from Philip Rivers, and with the team in win now mode, are fully expected to sign a big name in free agency next week.Depending on what direction they go, and the guarantees involved in the deal, a free agent addition will not preclude them from adding Herbert. He fits the mold of their recent quarterback additions, and would likely be best served sitting for a year or two before taking over under center for Los Angeles. He has all of the tools teams covet in a quarterback.

Team Impact

Justin Herbert will give the Chargers a long term answer at the quarterback position. They have a roster that is in win now mode, so it is fully expected that he redshirts his rookie season behind a free agent addition quarterback. Herbert could be starting for the Chargers for more than a decade, and is a great selection for a team that just let Philip Rivers hit free agency. They will not be bad enough to have a high enough pick to draft a blue chip quarterback again for at least the next five years, so taking the plunge here is necessary regardless of who they add in free agency.

Fantasy Impact

The addition of Justin Herbert stabilizes the dynasty values of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Hunter Henry is a free agent who may be priced out of the frugal Chargers’ comfort zone, so we will have to wait to see whether or not he gets a value boost as well. In this scenario Herbert would not have much redraft value outside of the deep superflex leagues or 25 player roster plus best ball leagues. Herbert is worth targeting as soon as 1.03 in superflex leagues, and in the mid to late second round in single QB formats.
