Adam Silver says NBA unsure if 2020 season will continue
The NBA has postponed its season due to the coronavirus outbreak. On Thursday night, commissioner Adam Silver says he’s unsure if the season will resume.
The NBA was proactive in shutting down its league for the foreseeable future behind commissioner Adam Silver’s leadership. Now he’s speaking on what impact the coronavirus outbreak might have on the balance of his regular season and playoffs.
After announcing such measures would be taken on Wednesday night, the NHL, MLS, NCAA, XFL and other sports leagues have followed suit. For now, the NBA is postponing games, with the hope it can eventually get back on the court and finish the 2019-20 season.
However, Silver spoke to Ernie Johnson of TNT on Thursday night and spoke of the uncertainty surrounding the rest of the campaign.
"“Of course, it’s possible,” Silver said in regards to a potential cancellation of the season. “I just don’t know enough at this point. There’s another factor that may go to the seasonality of this virus. I’ve talked to a lot of experts. Some have a theory that as with the common flu, as the weather changes, we may see it begin to peter out. Again, we don’t know, so at this point, we’re just waiting.”"
Silver is arguably (and really inarguably) the best commissioner of any North American sport. He acted quickly after the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder were forced to cancel their game on Wednesday night moments before tip-off. In the following hours, coronavirus tests concluded Jazz stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell were positive for the illness.
