4th round

No one expected “out-of-this-world” testing numbers from Utah’s Zack Moss, but his showing at the Combine has seemed to push him a bit further down people’s boards regardless. This could wind up being a benefit for the Chargers, who scoop him up here in the fourth round.

The Melvin Gordon era came to an unceremonious end in 2019 and an overall weak draft class at running back makes this a difficult year to be in need of help at the position. The contract extension for Austin Ekeler gives the team its clear starter for ’20, but it seems highly likely they’ll invest at the position in this draft.

With Ekeler’s ability in the passing game, the Chargers could turn to the between-the-tackles punishing running style of Moss to help lighten his load. Moss is exceptionally patient at the line of scrimmage and despite lacking the home run burst, always knows how to rack up chunk yardage and force missed tackles. He’s outstanding in short-yardage situations and should be an asset inside the red zone, especially if the Chargers continue to overhaul the offensive line.
