2020 NFL Draft: 5 players Chargers could take in Round 1
2. Jordan Love
A lot of NFL talent evaluators prefer Herbert to Love, but the Utah State product makes more sense for the Chargers. Lynn’s offense lends itself more towards a quarterback with exceptional athletic gifts. That makes Los Angeles a better bet to gamble on Love’s talent as opposed to passing on him due to concerns about his floor as a prospect.
In fairness, drafting a player like Love in the first round is the sort of move that either gets a GM fired or awarded with a long-term extension. He’s a boom or bust prospect in every sense of the word. It’s easy to project him a Pro Bowler or XFL starter in three years time.
Any franchise that spend a high draft choice on Love needs to place a ton of trust in their offensive coaching staff. He’s got a lot of technique issues that will need to be addressed in his rookie season. In particular, his footwork will need to take a massive step forward if he wants to become anything approximating an accurate passer in the NFL.
With that being said, his arm strength and mobility in the pocket do make him a really intriguing selection for a team that wants to build a modern NFL offense. He’s not Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson, but he put some exceptional throws and runs on film in college.
Someone will gamble on him early in the first round. The Chargers could be the team to pull the trigger on his services if they fall in love with his talent.
