9. No. 13 Valparaiso over No. 4 Ole Miss – 1998

  • Valparaiso wins 70-69

No. 13 Valparaiso slayed Ole Miss who was a tough out all season and most experts predicted would have little trouble with tiny Valparaiso, a small school in the Mid-Continent Conference. The Crusaders, led by head coach Homer Drew, were a program on the rise with the star player being Drew’s son Bryce.

Valpo gave Ole Miss everything they could handle in the contest, trailing 69-67 in the final seconds before Drew missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer. The Rebels secured the rebound before Valpo fouled Ansu Sesay to extend the game.

Sesay, a 74 percent foul shooter, missed both free throws to give the Crusaders a chance. A perfectly executed inbounds play saw the ball end up back in the hands of Bryce Drew, who nailed the game-winning three at the buzzer as Valpo stunned Ole Miss.

The Crusaders carried the momentum from that win forward with them all the way to the Sweet 16, where they lost to Rhode Island. The shot, as it is now known, will never be forgotten.
