8. 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp in Super Bowl LIV

This play is just as much — if not more — about the story behind it as it is about how things unfolded. Coming out of a timeout on the field, Patrick Mahomes asked offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy if he had enough time to run “Wasp.” He wasn’t talking about time left on the clock, though.

Mahomes was referring to his protection. “2-3 Jet Chip Wasp” is a play that involves a lot of deep-developing routes. They require extra time to unfold, something Mahomes hadn’t had much of throughout the Super Bowl. San Francisco’s front seven was pressuring him all night, but he convinced his coaches to call the play anyway.

On 3rd-and-15 from the Chiefs’ own 35 yard line, the turning point of the Super Bowl happened. Mahomes dropped back for what felt like forever before uncorking a deep ball while getting hit. Tyreek Hill was right where he needed to be, creating a bit of positive momentum the team desperately needed.

Everything was terrific here. The story behind the call. The drop back. The throw. The catch. Kansas City never looked back, blowing out the 49ers in the final seven minutes of the ballgame.
