March Madness: 25 greatest buzzer-beaters in NCAA Tournament history
By Nick Villano
24. Adam Woodbury: No. 7 Iowa vs. No. 10 Temple – 2016 Round of 64
Iowa looked like they were going to roll to an easy win over what looked like an outmatched Temple team. They took a 10-point lead in the second half, but Temple stopped it from there. They scratched and clawed their way back into the game, eventually, they were down three with just seconds left, and Quenton DeCosey took a 3-pointer to tie it. He missed, but he was fouled on the shot by Anthony Clemmons.
DeCosey was ice cold, making all three free throws, and this second round game was headed to overtime. A back-and-forth extra period led to Iowa getting the ball with just 22 seconds and tied after missing the front end of a one and one by Daniel Dingle. The Owls had a chance to take the lead, but they blew it. Now, Iowa had a chance to win and they did.
Mike Gesell missed a jumper with just under five seconds left. Adam Woodbury went up high to get the rebound and got it out of his hand with less than one second left. The rebound of this gives it a little bit of a different feel than other buzzer-beaters. Four Temple Owls watched Woodbury jump over them and put the ball back into the net.
Sure, this won’t live on in infamy because Iowa got destroyed two days later by second-seeded Villanova, but this was still one of the best buzzer-beating situations ever.
