1. Chicago Bears

The Bears are rightly cooling on Mitch Trubisky, with rumors attaching them to Teddy Bridgewater, Andy Dalton and even Nick Foles. Chicago has been easy to land on as a possible suitor for Newton, assuming the inevitability he’d be available. That time is now here.

Head coach Matt Nagy’s acumen as an offensive mind has taken a hit, perhaps most precisely as a nod to Trubisky’s limitations and things that can’t be done schematically or in play calling. The Bears have an intriguing set of weapons (Allen Robinson, David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson), and a better quarterback could unleash them.

The specifics of a possible trade aside, on its face the Bears are apparently willing to take on Foles’ fully guaranteed salary for this year. So the easy follow to that is the fact Newton has no guaranteed money left on his contract, and his $18.6 million base salary is very low in light of a quarterback market where the top sits north of $30 million per year.

The Bears won’t have a hard time upgrading from Trubisky if they want to, and it seems they want to. A search for a veteran quarterback is not done without seeing what it will take to get Newton.
