3. Trade for Derek Carr

Jon Gruden says all the right things about Carr publicly, but it’s obvious that the Raiders are shopping around for other options at quarterback. The Patriots could easily see that as an opportunity to buy low on the former first round pick.

In fairness to Raiders’ officials, they’ve got plenty of reasons to doubt Carr. His inability to stand up to pressure in the pocket is a massive issue. When Carr has time to throw he’s pretty good. When his pocket breaks down he turns into one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.

It’s also fair to criticize the Raiders for putting Carr under pressure so frequently. Gruden’s regime has done a better job than Carr’s previous coaching staffs, but a change of scenery might just do the signal caller a world of good.

Las Vegas would happily part with Carr for any sort of decent draft asset. The Patriots might need to wait until Gruden can secure his new starter, but taking on Carr as a reclamation project would be vintage Belichick. Keep an eye on Carr’s status the moment Gruden is able to lock up another starting quarterback.
