2. Tristan Wirfs

Wirfs doesn’t have the upside at the tackle position that Becton does, but he has a lot higher ceiling as a player. The Panthers can draft him at No. 7 and feel very confident that he’ll be a starter somewhere along their offensive line for the next decade.

It is very possible he can hold his own at the left tackle position. Letting him sit behind Okung for a season might be a luxury the Panthers can’t afford, but it could be what’s best for Wirfs’ long-term development as an offensive lineman.

If things don’t work out there, he could easily move to right tackle or kick inside at guard. Think of him as a potential swiss army knife along the team’s offensive line. His lack of elite athleticism might prevent him from ever becoming an All-Pro, but he’s a virtual lock to be a solid starter.

Ultimately, choosing Wirfs isn’t a pick that’s going to electrify a fan base, but it will add a player who should really help his team right away. That risk/reward proposition might not be enough for Rhule’s first big move with the Panthers, but it’s just the sort of move that Hurney’s front office may push for on draft night.
