3. Detroit Lions

The Jets may not be actively making themselves better in free agency, but they aren’t making decisions that would go against their own interests. The next three teams on their list are doing just that, beginning with the Detroit Lions.

People forget that the Lions were a sneaky good team before Matthew Stafford got hurt and the wheels fell off. The collapse at the end of the season has left Detroit looking for answers, and they keep landing on all the wrong ones.

The offensive line is an issue, and instead of re-signing Graham Glasgow, a coveted player who offers positional versatility, Detroit let him walk to sign Halapoulivaati Vaitai to a five-year deal worth $50 million. While Vaitai did well in spot work for the Eagles, the Lions are counting on him to be a starter, which is a risky proposition for a potential left tackle.

Detroit is also actively shopping Darius Slay and Devon Kennard, two of their most efficient defensive players. Kennard is a valuable player for the Lions coming off back-to-back seven sack seasons, and he is also a team captain.

Matt Patricia is really scrambling to save his job, throwing a ton of money at former Patriot Jamie Collins to try and fill a linebacking role on his defense. These moves likely won’t work, setting Detroit back another several years and likely contributing to another rebuild.
