No, Dana Carvey was not hosting a PlayStation 5 press conference on Wednesday, but you’d be forgiven for thinking so.
Video game developer Sony held a press conference on Wednesday introducing their upcoming console, the PlayStation 5, to the world. The conference was “a deep dive into [the] PS5’s system architecture, and how it will shape the future of games” as Sony is set to release the PS5 later this year.
Wednesday’s conference was quite the dry — but informative! — look at the specifications behind Sony’s newest console that will debut by the end of 2020, with all the denseness of your typical college lecture packed into a 55 minute presentation.
At first glance on social media, however, you’d be led to believe that Dana Carvey of Saturday Night Live and Wayne’s World fame was hosting the event, as random of a crossover as that would be.
Overheard in my house during the PS5 Cerny talk:

"What?! They got Dana Carvey to make this presentation?" pic.twitter.com/hIKBBlvaTx
Sadly, that is not Carvey, but is in fact Mark Cerny, a video game developer and the PS5’s lead system architect giving the presentation.
Of course, that did not stop social media from getting Carvey trending on Twitter — under gaming no less — and letting the internet run wild with jokes as confused fans tuned into the press conference to see just why a random celebrity was hosting a video game press conference.
Can we all take a moment to appreciate that Mark Cerny is trending, and the fact that people think he looks like Dana Carvey made Dana Carvey trend even higher. pic.twitter.com/U0zQgOrP3Q

Is that Dana Carvey?

It is absolutely fascinating just how uncanny it is that Cerny and Carvey look alike. It is for sure a forgivable offense, given the pair both sport the exact same hair cut and style of glasses that at first glance are nearly indistinguishable.
How cool would it have been if it actually was Carvey hosting Sony’s event? Maybe the PlayStation marketing team should look into getting Carvey on board with the idea to spice up their reveal presentations for casual audiences down the line.
