Eric Berry, S

Speaking of veteran presence, Eric Berry is available in free agency and was rumored to be coveted by many teams prior to the start of free agency. COVID-19 definitely complicates things for the former All-Pro, though.

The biggest question mark with Berry is his physical ability to play football. After playing in just one game in 2017, the five time Pro Bowler followed it up with just two games in 2018. After that, Kansas City had to part ways with the long time heart of their defense.

Berry took 2019 off from football to focus on getting healthy and ready to get back on the field.

The Bucs have a lot of young players that they hope can turn in to quality pros on the defense. What they don’t have is a defensive leader who can create identity and be a role model for the younger players around them.

Enter Eric Berry.

Berry will never be the three time All-Pro that he was in Kansas City before injuries wrecked his career following a remarkable comeback from cancer.

But, if he can be on the field for 14-16 games for the Bucs; if he can lead the huddle, the practice field, and the film room; he’ll be worth the very modest (maybe even veteran minimum plus incentives) investment that Tampa would make in him.

Berry has to have a little sting from missing out on Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIV Championship – which makes a ring chasing couple of seasons in Tampa Bay a perfect fit.
