Jadeveon Clowney rumors: Close to a new deal with Seahawks?
Jadeveon Clowney could be sticking around with the Seattle Seahawks.
Many of the top NFL free agents have already found new homes or locked in new deals to remain in place. But Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is among those still looking for a rich new deal.
Clowney’s market has been relatively chilly in the first week of free agency as he’s seen fellow defensive end Robert Quinn sign a $70 million deal with the Chicago Bears that guaranteed him $30 million after his 11.5 sacks last year with the Dallas Cowboys.
The 27-year-old former No. 1 overall pick may have hoped for that type of guarantees in his new deal but thus far teams haven’t been interested in ponying up that much cash for a player with his injury history.
But could the Seahawks be nearing a new deal with the player they acquired last September for a third-round pick and reserve players?
According to Pro Football Talk, there is chatter that the Seahawks and Clowney are moving toward a new deal. PFT makes no mention of the potential term or dollar value for the potential deal. However, moments after saying a new deal is being worked toward, Mike Florio said this could be an attempt by Clowney’s camp to drum up interest outside Seattle.
Okay, got that.
Share rumor that the Seahawks are moving toward a new deal with Clowney and then moments later say the rumor is starting from Clowney’s agents and not the Seahawks.
All of this means, the Seahawks could still be viewed as the front-runner to sign the former three-time Pro Bowler, but at the same time, a new deal does not appear to be nearing the finishing touches.
Clowney flashed at times in his first year in Seattle but often disappeared for large stretches, especially during the tail-end of the season when he was hampered by an injury that caused him to miss three games and it led to sports hernia surgery in the offseason.
The longer the Clowney sweepstakes play out, the more likely it is that Clowney may have to take a prove-it deal on a short-term to show he’s healthy and capable of taking over games and then get his big-money deal next year.
