The NHL has opened some of its online library to fans with the Pause Binge collection. Here are the five best things you can watch while social distancing.

While there is a distinct lack of hockey games being played at the moment — and for the foreseeable future — the NHL has given fans the gift of an online library of content. On Friday, the NHL released what they’re calling its “Pause Binge” collection, which includes classic games and documentaries, among other features the league has produced in the past through the end of April.

Clumsy name aside, the NHL has now opened up a vast library of content for fans to enjoy while stuck inside thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Though the online catalogue’s interface is clunky to traverse, there are some hidden gems within the hours of content the NHL has just released to fans.

As such, we’ve taken it upon ourselves here at FanSided to dive into this new library of content to find the most engaging pieces of media the NHL has given us through their Pause Binge collection as we social distance our way through the end of March. Here are the five best pieces of content to watch from the NHL’s Pause Binge collection.

5. The Dave Ayres game

It’s incredible to think the Dave Ayres story happened just one month ago at the end of February. So much has happened in the days and weeks since the Carolina Hurricanes miraculously won their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 after putting emergency backup goaltender Ayres into the game.

The saga is available to watch for free — as are all the games in the 2019-20 regular season — now on the NHL’s website via their respective game pages. There are dozens of great NHL games from this season, but even though the Ayres game is still fresh in many minds, it remains quite the story even to this day.

If you’re a Maple Leafs fan, feel free to skip out on this one, unless you want to endure the pain of rewatching your favorite team lose to a zamboni driver. However, this game will remain an all-timer in NHL history for good reason, and is a lovely feel-good story to binge watch while isolated from others without the sport we all love.
