The World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) announces a virtual all-time heavyweight great boxing e-Tournament in conjunction with EA Sports.

With the sporting world coming to a standstill due to the coronavirus global pandemic, the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) and EA Sports have teamed up to host a virtual boxing tournament featuring some of the greatest boxers of all time.

The WBSS made the announcement via a press release during the morning hours on Sunday, March 21. Boxing bouts, like all other sports, are postponed for the next several months, but this virtual tournament gives fight fans something to enjoy during the worldwide COVID-19 struggle.

“As boxing fans around the world look for distractions, we have decided to launch a special ‘eWBSS Heavyweight Legends’ tournament to provide some much-needed relief and entertainment for fight fans around the world,” said the WBSS in their press release.

The WBSS has hosted numerous boxing tournaments over the last three years. Its initial weight division tournaments featured super middleweights and cruiserweights. Both tournaments were successful and helped solidify Oleksandr Usyk and Callum Smith as emerging boxing superstars.

Recent WBSS tournaments have struggled in terms of marketability and execution. Presumed money problems stalled the progress of their super lightweight division tournament. Still, it concluded with a thrilling fight between Josh Taylor and Regis Prograis, with Taylor winning by majority decision.

The eWBSS Heavyweight Legends tournament will feature the likeness of eight of the greatest heavyweights in history, including Muhammad Ali. The winner of each WBSS tournament has received a trophy named in honor of Ali.

The seven remaining heavyweights will be named on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m ET on all WBSS (@wbsuperseries) social media channels. The tournament will be simulated using EA Sports’  “Fight Night Champion” video game. The first quarter-final bout takes place on Monday, March 23, at 1 p.m ET on the WBSS Facebook page.

Proceeding bouts will occur every day after the first match at 1 p.m ET on the WBSS Facebook page until the tournament’s conclusion on Sunday, March 29.

It will be interesting which other heavyweights are included in the eWBSS Heavyweight Legends tournament. This is also a good indication that EA Sports might be planning a new “Fight Night” video game soon. This fun virtual tournament will help fill the void of boxing’s absence.
