2020 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 7-round mock
By Nick Villano
Third Round
Back to the defense, where Patricia is calling to build up the side of the ball where he can do most of his damage. Jonathan Greenard is an extremely athletic linebacker that excelled after transferring to the Florida Gators. That will intrigue Patricia because again he is going to look for players who can step into starting roles almost immediately.
The Lions pass rush, which is now much better with Jamie Collins, Danny Shelton and Chase Young, could use one more really good piece. Greenard has a lot of upside but showed he can quickly learn a playbook, step in and dominate. He had 9.5 sacks in 12 starts for the Gators last season.
An issue with Greenard is most of his stats came against bad teams. He had four of his 9.5 sacks against Miami and Florida State. While it’s nice he stepped up in rivalry games, those two teams are bad. He had zero sacks against Auburn and Georgia, two teams the Gators really needed one of their top pass rushers to excel.
That lack of production against top teams gives us pause about who’s on the board here, but Greenard does have the skillset to make things work with little training, and the Lions need that. With the COVID-19 issue putting the NFL offseason in flux, knowing they can get a player who can learn on the fly is very important to this regime.
