Kansas basketball: 2019-20 season review and 2020-2021 first-look preview
Memorable Moments
Kansas wins a double-overtime thriller in Maui
No one knew how good the Dayton Flyers were early in the season, but Kansas found out the hard way in Maui. Obi Toppin and the Flyers pushed Kansas to double-overtime in the final of the Maui Invitational, but the Jayhawks held strong to outlast the Flyers and claim the tournament title. Devon Dotson was a force in that game, scoring 31 points in the win.
Baylor takes down Kansas at the Phog
Winning at Allen Fieldhouse is a very rare occurrence for Big 12 foes, and that was especially true for Baylor. Prior to this season, the Bears had never won in Lawrence, but they changed that in dramatic fashion. Baylor went into Kansas in early January and topped the Jayhawks by a dozen, raising concerns about the legitimacy of this team.
Kansas snaps Baylor’s 23-game winning streak
The most eagerly anticipated rematch of the regular season came in late February when Kansas went to Waco to try and secure a season split with Baylor. The contest was an epic thriller to the finish, but in the end, Kansas prevailed to put themselves right back into the mix for the Big 12’s regular-season title. The Jayhawks were also able to snap the Bears’ 23-game winning streak as Azubuike played the role of a showstopper, putting up 23 points and 19 rebounds to dominate the interior.
Kansas reclaims the Big 12 regular-season title
Last season was a disappointing one for Kansas after seeing its streak of Big 12 regular season titles get snapped at 14. The win over Baylor made it possible for a new streak to begin, and with the Bears dropping two more games down the stretch Kansas had a chance to win the title outright in the season finale at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders fought hard but the Jayhawks survived 66-62, starting a new streak of regular-season conference championships by going 17-1 in Big 12 play.
