49. Wide Receiver. Baylor. Denzel Mims. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. player. 860

With their first pick in this draft, the Steelers should take whatever wide receiver is the highest remaining on their draft board. Juju Smith-Schuster is a phenomenal talent but faced innumerable double and triple-coverages last year, especially when running back James Conner was injured, and the team must get him some relief. In free agency, they attempted to do this by signing veteran tight end Eric Ebron, but the reality is that he is a shell of his former self and will do little to relieve the pressure on Smith-Schuster.

Denzel Mims can solve that problem. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound wide receiver out of Baylor can do it all. He’s a tall, tenacious receiver with exceptional hands. He is quick, fast and even reasonably strong for his size. He’s a great complement to this offense and Roethlisberger will love having another tall, fast target on the roster.

The biggest area of improvement for Mims is in his route running. He’s not the most precise of technicians and in college got away with raw athletic talent against inferior Big 12 defenses for most of his career. He’ll need to work on this, but not having to take on the pressure of being the No. 1 threat will help a great deal with that.

In a lot of previous drafts, he’s a top-35 pick. He gets pushed down this year due to an abundance of wideout talent in the 2020 class.
