NFL free agency grades: How did each team do?
Jacksonville Jaguars
Like the rest of the AFC South, the Jacksonville Jaguars had a bizarre first wave of free agency, especially when it came to some of the trades they made.
Nick Foles had no real future with the team, so dealing him to the Chicago Bears wasn’t a surprise. The problem is the Jaguars have to eat nearly $20 million in dead money for the mere price of a fourth-round pick, and Foles was technically their most accomplished quarterback. Ultimately, moving him and somehow finding a suitor for his contract was a real positive, but it says a lot about the Jags’ offseason so far when this was one of their best moves.
Jacksonville also traded star defensive lineman Calais Campbell for only a fifth-round pick, providing the Baltimore Ravens with one of the quiet steals of free agency. They also shipped one of the best cornerbacks in the league, A.J. Bouye, for a fourth-round pick. Soon, they will also be forced to deal one of the NFL’s most explosive pass rushers, Yannick Ngakoue, for far less than market value.
In addition to falling on the losing end of multiple trades, the Jaguars didn’t make any signings worth praising. Joe Schobert is getting too much money, Darqueze Dennard is hardly an impact player at cornerback, and none of the linemen they signed are particularly useful.
All of the Jaguars incompetence has come to a head this offseason. They don’t know how to rebuild, they don’t know how to build a team, they can’t manage players effectively, and they are blowing up a once-promising team that Tom Coughlin ran into the ground.
Jacksonville seem to drop the ball on their most critical decisions as an organization. It’ll get better from here after this painful offseason, but they must learn from their mistakes.
