Running Back Rankings: Tier 3

10. Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State (projected 6th-7th)

5’10” 203lbs, 4.41 40yd

This guy crushed the combine. He is not very big, but he is an explosive athlete. 4.41 40 yard dash, 37 inch verticle, 125 broad jump, and he put up 20 reps on the bench at 200lbs. The Appalachian State product was also a dynamic kick and punt returner, housing a return for a touchdown in each season. If he can bulk up, I see 3 down back in his potential. He is not just a scat back, think more of a Ray Rice type of athlete.

11. Eno Benjamin, Arizona State (projected: 5th-6th)

5’9″ 207lbs, 4.57 40yd

Eno Benjamin was unimpressive in the 40 yard dash, but put up good agility and jumping measurements. I was hoping he was able to run close to what Darrynton Evans did though. I cannot see him carving out a role as anything more than a pass-catching satellite back. He was extremely productive at Arizona State, amassing 35 or more receptions in his sophomore and junior seasons. He commanded a 14.4% target share in his senior season, competing with other high level athletes. Duke Johnson is a near perfect comp.

12. Zach Moss, Utah (projected: 3rd-4th)

5’9″ 223, 4.65 40yd

Moss was projected as a 2nd round pick in some circles prior to the NFL Combine. The 4.65 40 yard dash is inexcusable. He was a productive participant at Utah, but he did not set the program on fire. His target share was never larger than 10%, and his production in the pass game was sporadic. Even in an ideal situation I do not trust Moss. Ranking Moss 12 means that I will have zero Zach Moss stock on my taxi squad in 2020.

13. Rico Dowdle, South Carolina (projected 6th-7th)

5’11” 213lbs, 4.54 40yd

Dowdle has the size, speed and athleticism to be a 3 down running back in the NFL. He had a very good combine, but his numbers at South Carolina were less impressive. His issue has been staying healthy. He missed some time in each of his 4 seasons at South Carolina. You have to be a stud in order to lead an SEC school in rushing as an 18 year old true freshman. Think a slimmer version of Carlos Hyde.
