3 players the Yankees should be ready to trade for to win the World Series
1. Giancarlo Stanton
The Yankees shrewdly acquired Stanton from the Marlins for nothing, but he’s going to be much more costly to get rid of. His massive contract is going to hang around the franchise’s neck like an albatross as soon as this season.
Stanton is essentially a better version of Frazier. He’s not well suited to play quality defense at either corner outfield spot. That means he has to be an elite hitter to justify his inclusion in the everyday lineup as a DH.
If the Yankees could count on him to stay healthy and productive as he ages that would be a reasonable place to leave Stanton. The trouble is that there’s no reason to trust him to stay healthy for an entire season. Paying a part-time DH like a superstar is going to be a major issue for the Yankees payroll moving forward.
The longer Cashman waits to move Stanton the more difficult it will be to find a buyer. Many executives already believe his contract will be a non-starter for the rest of MLB. Would that still be true if the Yankees attached a high-level prospect as a sweetener? That’s a question Cashman just find an answer for later this season. Stanton will not be a positive force for the next Yankees team that wins a title.
