Duke basketball: All-time starting lineup – From Laettner to Reddick to Zion
SG – JJ Redick
The lineup begins with Mr. Longevity himself and the Duke Blue Devils’ all-time leading scorer. J.J. Redick amassed 2,769 points over his four years in Durham. The 6-foot-4 guard out of Virginia came to Duke in 2002 as a McDonald’s All-American and left a big mark on the university. His ascension to big man on campus happened swiftly for him and the Cameron Crazies made him a beloved member of the school lore.
However, what the sweet-shooting guard is more memorable for is taking on the mantle as most-hated Blue Devil. Following some big names in the early years of Mike Krzyzewski’s tenure, this title had fallen to the waist side for some time before Redick came around. Students from Maryland and North Carolina discovered his cell phone number and bombarded him with numerous hate calls a day. His jump shot was as pure as the hatred that came spewing from the fans of opposing teams.
Redick’s scoring numbers increased every year. As a freshman, he turned heads — capitalized by a 30-point performance in the ACC Tournament championship game– by averaging 15 points per game and that number skyrocketed to 26.8 in his final year.
He was a four-time All-ACC selection, three-time All-ACC Tournament member, two-time ACC Player of the Year, two-time Consensus All-American, a two-time recipient of the Rupp Trophy and as a senior, he took home the Wooden Award, Naismith Award and Associated Press Player of the Year honors. Redick had his jersey retired by Duke in February 2007, at the time he was the 13th player in school history to have his jersey hung from the rafters.
