New York Jets

Beyond linebacker, every area of the Jets defense can be considered a need. However, the talent void at edge rusher has been a problem for Gang Green for far too long.

Given the holes in the secondary, on the offensive line and at wide receiver following the departure of Robby Anderson in free agency, the Jets may be reticent to part with premium draft capital. New York holds the 11th-overall pick in the draft.

The dearth of edge rushers in the 2020 class could force their hand, though, as it is debatable at best whether the Jets would be able to acquire a true game-changer off the edge in the draft.

Last year’s third-overall pick, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, provided little evidence in his rookie year to suggest he can be a dominant interior pass-rusher in the mold of Aaron Donald or Chris Jones.

There is plenty of time for Williams to develop, but general manager Joe Douglas would be foolish to simply rely on the former Alabama star taking the next step.

The Jets have over $34 million in cap space and putting together a trade offer to allow them to spend a chunk of that room on an extension for Ngakoue is the type of move a continually listless franchise needs to make to vault into the ranks of AFC East contenders.
