Melvin Mora

Mora is best known for his time with the Baltimore Orioles. In 2004, his on-base percentage was the best in the American League as he won a Silver Slugger and earned MVP consideration.

But Mora actually started his career with the Mets in 1999, and is the answer to a great trivia question. Mora scored the game-winning run on a walk-off wild pitch in the last game of that season, which clinched a one-game playoff with the Reds.

Mora was a utility player for most of his first few years, but he never got ample playing time with New York.

As soon as Mora became a full-time player for the Mets, they traded him for Mike Kinkade and Mike Bordick. Those two guys played a combined 89 games for the Mets, while Mora would go on to play 11 more seasons. Kinkade did not play in that World Series run, while Bordick hit .121 in it.

For what it’s worth, Mora slashed .400/.500/.600 in 19 plate appearances in the 1999 NLCS run with the Mets.

I’ll bet a ton of you you reading this went from “Wow, I had no idea Melvin Mora was a Met” to “Wow, the Mets got totally fleeced when they traded away Melvin Mora.”
