11 players you totally forgot played for the Mets
By Ryan Morik
JJ Putz
It’s a shame that Putz only received one vote in the 2020 Baseball of Fame voting. It’d be cool to see Putz don a Mets cap on that plaque.
There was nothing like opening Citi Field with the big acquisition of JJ Putz.
After six years with the Mariners, Putz was part of a three-team, 12-player deal where he went to New York. The Mets ultimately dished out Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, and other minor leaguers.
Two years after owning a 1.38 ERA, being named an All-Star for the first (and only) time in his career, and earning American League Most Valuable Player votes, Putz had the worst season of his career up to that point.
Putz allowed 17 earned runs in just 29.1 innings, which is a 5.22 ERA. He owned a rough K/9 of 5.8, while he walked the same amount of guys that he struck out (19).
Thankfully for the Mets, this is the only time in their recent history where they traded for a reliever who one had a dominant season only to put up horrible numbers as soon as he got to New York, right?!
