Ken Dorsey, quarterback – 1999-2002

Ken Dorsey was the biggest constant during the run of greatness by the Miami football team from 2000-2002. Dorsey took over as the Hurricanes starting quarterback as a true freshman in 1999 and led the Hurricanes through the 2002 season. In 40 career starts, Dorsey led Miami to a 38-2 record.

Miami nearly won three straight national championships with Dorsey at quarterback. Miami finished 0.32 points behind Florida State in the final BCS Standings before the bowl games in 2000 despite defeating the Seminoles. Florida State would go on to lose 13-2 to Oklahoma for the National Championship in the Orange Bowl.

The 2001 Miami football team led by Reed on defense and Dorsey on offense were on a mission. Miami outscored their opponents by a program-record 33.9 points per game on their way to their fifth National Championship. Miami carried a 34 game win streak led by Dorsey through the 2003 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

An extremely questionable interference call well after the final whistle in the 2003 Fiest Bowl cost Miami a second straight national championship. A loss to Washington in 2000 was the only other loss the Hurricanes had during the tenure with Dorsey at quarterback. Dorsey is still among the leaders in several passing categories in Miami history.

Dorsey’s 86 career TD passes still top Miami, his 9,565 passing yards are second and his margin of 86 TD passes to 48 interceptions is the biggest of any Hurricanes quarterback. Dorsey worked with Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss during his first two seasons as the Miami quarterback. In 2000 and ’01, Andre Johnson was the primary wideout.

Dorsey did have Jeremy Shockey in 2000 and ’01 and Kellen Winslow Jr. in 2002 at tight end, but during his last two years as the starting quarterback, Miami did not have the elite level talent on the perimeter as most great passing attacks have. Dorsey is currently the quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills.
