Best Washington football players: Modern-era Mount Rushmore – From Steve Emtman to Jake Browning
Jake Browning, quarterback
Jake Browning has one of the most hotly debated careers by Husky fans, but when you look at the numbers, there shouldn’t be much of a discussion that Browning belongs on this list. When you take a look at the Washington all-time leaderboard, Browning is at the top of pretty much every category.
He’s the school’s all-time leader in wins (39), passing yards (12,296), and passing touchdowns (94). Browning is also the Pac-12’s all-time wins leader and is fourth in the conference in career passing yards. While Browning’s true legacy is often debated among Husky fans due to a drop-off in production over his final two seasons, the numbers speak for themselves, along with his 2016 season which was one of the greatest a college quarterback has ever had.
During that year, where Browning was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, he threw for 3,430 yards and 43 touchdowns. He rushed for four more, while only throwing nine interceptions. He finished sixth in the Heisman voting that year while leading Washington to a berth in the College Football Playoff.
After college, Browning went on to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings and was given the largest signing bonus in NFL history for an undrafted free agent. He has yet to take an NFL snap in the regular season but he should always be remembered as a Husky legend.
