New England Patriots 2020 mock draft: Full 7 rounds
By Conor Dorney
3rd round
Ever since Rob Gronkowski sailed off on a party boat into the sunset, New England has struggled to find success at the tight end position. While the overall crop of tight end talent in this year’s class isn’t particularly strong, Dayton’s Adam Trautman has a high ceiling and could be a great fit for the first of the team’s three third-round selections.
Trautman is a big target (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) and dominated FCS competition for the Flyers en route to being named Pioneer League Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. He uses his frame to bully opposing defenders at the catch point and his excellent short-area quickness (6.78 three-cone time) makes him a mismatch against linebackers.
I’m not sure it’s fair to expect anyone to live up to the standards Gronk set, but Trautman seems like the type of player Josh McDaniels would love to have as a weapon in his offensive arsenal.
Those with an affinity for making “Jake Fromm” State Farm jokes will be disappointed to know that his legal name is William. Regardless, once the initial rush of quarterbacks happens in the first two rounds, it’s hard to find as sensible of a team-prospect fit as Fromm and the Patriots.
The team seems pretty confident in 2019 pick Jarrett Stidham, but I’m sure they’d be more comfortable with some more depth at the position. Enter Fromm, who is lauded by scouts for his poise and intelligence despite not being the flashiest at the position from a tools or upside perspective.
Fromm beat out fellow 2020 classmate Jacob Eason for the starting job with the Bulldogs and never looked back, finishing his collegiate career with 78 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions. If ever there were a quarterback who fit the mold of what New England values in a quarterback prospect, Fromm is the guy.
After investing their first pick of 2019 in a Sun Devil, the Pats go back to Tempe to snag Arizona State running back Eno Benjamin.
As a Sun Devil alum, I’ll admit I’m biased in my hopes of seeing Benjamin succeed in the NFL, and it’s tough to imagine a better fit than with the Patriots. Benjamin is a remarkably patient runner with elusive abilities and excellent hands out of the backfield that will make him a valuable player at the next level.
James White will hit free agency following next season and Benjamin could be the perfect player to step into his role in McDaniels’ offense.
