5 NFL teams that could win Super Bowl 55 if they had a better quarterback
By John Buhler
Two years ago, the Los Angeles Chargers were good enough to win a Super Bowl. That defense was loaded and they had all sorts of weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Yes, the Chargers are one of the most snake-bitten franchises in the NFL, but they had a great shot at it in 2018. Too bad quarterback Philip Rivers fell off a cliff last year and the team suffered greatly because of it.
Now that Rivers is gone, as he signed a one-year deal to play quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, the Chargers are rolling with journeyman Tyrod Taylor as the Week 1 starter, at least for now. Taylor had decent success playing for the Buffalo Bills when Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn was on the staff. At his core, Taylor is solid but isn’t leading any team to a Super Bowl.
The Chargers are in an interesting spot in that they could still target a former No. 1 overall pick in either Cam Newton or Jameis Winston to join their roster. They’d compete with Taylor for the starting job, and both would likely beat him out eventually. The Chargers also have the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and could draft someone like Justin Herbert with that selection.

Simply put, the rest of the Chargers’ roster is ready to compete with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. Even with halfway decent quarterback play, they could make the playoffs. If the Chargers had a quarterback like a Matthew Stafford or a Jimmy Garoppolo, they may be good enough to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history this year. An upgrade is needed here.
