3. Carolina Panthers

It’s no secret the Panthers are entering a new era in the franchise’s history. Cam Newton, Luke Keuchly, and Ron Rivera are all gone — stalwarts of the most recent regime. The team that went to a Super Bowl a handful of seasons ago is no longer there, and what remains looks very different.

Why shouldn’t the uniforms?

Changing the uniforms of a team with a history like the Chiefs or Packers is a harder argument to make than saying the Panthers should. The timing is right, with Matt Rhule taking over, Joe Brady hoping to take the offense to the next level, and Christian McCaffrey as the new face of the franchise. What better time than now to rebrand a little?

There’s little chance the Panthers are actually good next season, which lines up with a timeline that could bring them to prominence once again. If the team indeed tanks for Trevor Lawrence (or somehow ends up with him or another top quarterback prospect in 2021), Carolina will be well positioned to reintroduce themselves to the NFL. Historically, teams on the verge of a rebuild or that think they’re about to take the franchise in a new direction represent that with new uniforms.

The Browns a few years ago. The Buccaneers this year. The Panthers next?
