Buffalo Sabres

There’s no doubt that Buffalo is a great hockey and football town, and that the city has witnessed too much heartbreak over the past three decades with both the Sabres and Bills.

Hockey greats and Hall of Famers have also laced up the skates for the Sabres and celebrated in the City of Light with one of the best goal horns of all-time. The Sabres’ buzzer-sounding horn that seemed to alarm everyone in the arena really took off in the late 1990s.

Buffalo introduced a goal horn that entailed its original and old-school police siren version which was then followed by Nirvana’s “No. 2 Song.” The dynamic of the mixing goal horns and an upbeat song were a nice change of pace for the NHL. It seemed that other teams followed the Sabres’ path to incorporate the Nirvana hit, which electrified any city’s fan base.

Luckily the Sabres haven’t strayed away from the buzzer-sounding horn, but have modified it over the years while changing goal songs to something more mainstream.

The changes over the last decade haven’t been terrible, but fans can hope that the Sabres will reintroduce the Nirvana jam sooner than later. Let’s not forget that Buffalo experienced a string of successful seasons with the goal horn and song during the late 1990s and early 2000s, which included four Eastern Conference Finals appearances and one showing in the 1998-99 Stanley Cup Final.

At this point, hockey fans arguably associate the Nirvana song with the Sabres and all-time favorite skaters such as Michael Peca or Miroslav Satan. It’s also fair to point out that there aren’t many teams that have been around since the 1970s like the Sabres that have stuck with a consistent goal horn, either.

While Buffalo is expected to reintroduce the team’s original blue and maze sweater designs, hopefully, they don’t rid the epic goal horn.
