Detroit Lions Draft Trades If Tua Is Available At No. 3

The entire top five starts and ends with what happens with Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. COVID-19 has absolutely shrouded his draft status in mystery as teams are unable to conduct their own physicals to discern his status after hip surgery.

In fact, that merky medical status may help Detroit in the long run. Teams could choose not to trade up as high as number two, leaving Tua on the board and potentially pitting teams pitting for Tua against teams pining for a tackle or a defender. In that scenario, Detroit wins big.

If Tua is on the board when the Lions come on the clock at number three, some trades that may make sense for them to consider include:

  1. Miami Dolphins – for a year now the Dolphins have been linked to the star Alabama quarterback, since their offseason strategy made most believe the team was in fact ‘Tanking for Tua‘. The Dolphins have plenty of selections in 2020 and could package the 5th overall pick with with the 39th (2nd round) and 70th (3rd round) pick to move up. If another team is pushing, they may have to include both of their second round selections (39 and 56) to do so. But, even that would still leave the team with four top 100 picks (including three in the first round), and the possibility to trade down from one of the other first round picks to pick up more. The Dolphins continue to be the team most likely to trade up for Tua.
  2. LA Chargers – The Chargers are trying to convince everyone, and maybe themselves, that they’re going in to the season with Tyrod Taylor at the helm. Maybe they will, but the team would be foolish to not start thinking about the quarterback of the future. And the chance to nab Tua may be too much to pass up. A trade that would make since would be the Chargers sending the sixth overall pick along with the 37th and a 2021 2nd round pick to the Lions.

Those two teams make the most sense but don’t discount other quarterback needy teams making a big splash and giving up huge capital like the Las Vegas Raiders, the Jacksonville Jaguars, or the New England Patriots.
