This year’s draft class is weak at the tight end position, but Cole Kmet is the consensus best player at the position. And at No. 62, Kmet would be a nice late second-round choice for a Green Bay Packers team currently without a quality tight end.

Jimmy Graham’s departure is a net positive for the Packers because he is clearly past his prime. However, the Pack absolutely must give Aaron Rodgers an upgrade at the position, given how important it should be in this offense.

As of right now, Marcedes Lewis would be the team’s starting tight end, and while there are worse veteran options, Lewis is better as a blocker than a receiver and has never been an impact player.

Kmet caught nearly 70 passes for Notre Dame last season and has a 6’6″ frame which should help him become a quality possession receiver for the Packers. Rookie tight ends, especially those taken outside the top 20 picks, rarely make a profound impact on Day 1, but Kmet should immediately start over Lewis.

NFL.com’s Lance Zeirlein praised Kmet’s consistency and stated he’s the kind of player who can start on Day 1. With Lewis as insurance in case Kmet isn’t as-advertised as a two-way tight end, the Packers should be good-to-go at the position if they make this pick. If not, they could have a glaring hole at the tight end position for yet another season.
