1. Money

Stanton’s current contract commits the Yankees to keep him employed for at least eight more seasons before his team option in 2028. More importantly, it requires New York to pay him between $26 and $32 million every year in between.

That contract is an albatross that will sink Stanton’s trade value around MLB. That doesn’t mean the Yankees are excused from trying to get rid of it. It’s just as large a millstone around the franchise’s neck when it comes to building future World Series contenders.

As bad as paying Stanton $26 million in 2020 might be, it pales in comparison to the pain of paying him $32 million in 2025. This is a long-term contract that will look worse and worse as time rolls along.

The right strategy for the Yankees needs to be taking their medicine immediately. They should deal Stanton now while another franchise might still believe there’s positive value to be had at the beginning of his contract. If they wait another year or two to cut ties with the veteran slugger, every team in the league will know his contract is a poison pill for their respective books.

The Yankees need to do whatever they can to move Stanton either before the 2020 season begins. The odds are stacked against Cashman pulling off that kind of trade, but it would be in the franchise’s best interest.
