2020 NFL Draft position rankings: Top 10 running backs
4. J.K. Dobbins, Ohio State
Dobbins has an argument to be the top back in the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the summer, there were many questions surrounding J.K. Dobbins’ game. Some of it was injuries but he didn’t look like a fluid mover and he lacked requisite linear speed and ability as a receiver.
The good news is that all changed in the 2019 season. Dobbins looked fresh, healthy and lighter as the season began and it showed up big for him and the Buckeyes.
The two best traits for Dobbins are his contact balance and receiving ability. Dobbins shows a great leg drive through contact and it often takes a couple of defenders to bring him down when he reaches the second level.
As a receiver, Dobbins is savvy at working over the middle of the field and sitting in zones to help out his quarterback, along with making defenders miss when the ball is in his hands. When Dobbins gets into space, he finds a second gear and can break off some big gains. He’s also looked better laterally, setting up defenders well and making them miss with defined cuts. Dobbins also engages well in pass protection and keeps a wide base.
His vision is hit or miss at times and he’s almost too patient in that you’ll see some negative gains on tape. Dobbins also won’t be the running back that burns defenders or erases angles with long speed. However, he’s a very well-rounded player and should make an immediate impact wherever he ends up.
