New England Patriots

This isn’t likely, but hear me out. Tom Brady is off to Tampa Bay, and as of now, it looks like the Patriots are going to roll with Jarrett Stidham as their next starter. Stidham was a good quarterback while at Auburn, but in the limited action he saw of him as a pro, it didn’t look like he was ready to be the heir apparent to Tom Brady.

The Patriots could make a very un-Patriot like move, moving up from pick 23 to pick four to land the guy they want. There has been buzz about them potentially taking Jordan Love at the 23rd overall pick, but if they swapped picks with the Giants, they could get either Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert.

R.J. White of CBS Sports wrote an article on how the Patriots could trade up into the top five and noted that their first round pick could be paired with a player such as Joe Thuney, Julian Edelman, or Marcus Cannon. The Giants have needs for both the offensive line and at wide receiver, so New England could entice them to trade down with one of their better o-linemen.

It’s doubtful New England makes this kind of move because that’s not “the Patriot way”, but with Brady off to Tampa, there’s a need at the quarterback spot and this would be quite the way to excite the fan base who might be a bit down in the dumps right now.

If the worst case scenario for the Giants is that no one wants to trade with them and then they end up with a player like Isaiah Simmons or a top offensive tackle prospect, then that’s still a pretty good draft. At pick number four, however, their phones should be ringing off the hook and hopefully they’ll consider a trade down so that another team can find their next quarterback.
