Pick Analysis. QB. Oregon. 13. Scouting Report. Justin Herbert. 6. player

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn may be content to run through the 2020 season with Tyrod Taylor in control following Philip Rivers’ departure, but that doesn’t mean he won’t add a quarterback to the mix. Oregon’s Justin Herbert is an NFL-ready signal-caller, but he could still use a year to develop in a new system.

For the Ducks, Herbert was a star, and he will bring some NFL ready skills to his new team. He is a very big quarterback at 6-foot-6, with a filled-out frame. Herbert has good pre-snap read skills to take advantage of matchups and to read a defense completely. He is a full-field scanner and will find the open man.

With a rocket arm, Herbert can beat defenses deep and keep tight windows open a little longer when paired with his ability to use his eyes and keep a safety in the middle. From 2018 to ’19, Herbert improved his feet in the pocket and has truly developed into a prototypical pocket passer. That said, he isn’t completely incapable of running with the ball. In the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin this past season he rushed for three scores.

Herbert has the skills to step in and start right away, but if a team like the Chargers wants him to develop a little more to get ready for the NFL, it won’t hurt.
