There exists, of course, the possibility that the Patriots stay put in the first round and target a great player with the 23rd overall selection in the first round. If they do that, they could find themselves in a position to target Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.

While there is certainly a chance they’d have to trade up to get Love (with teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, the Miami Dolphins or the Jacksonville Jaguars all possible destinations in the five picks before them), the odds seem about even that they could stay where there are and take him with their first-round selection.

Love is a bit of a project but has a wealth of talent which, under the right circumstances, could help him to develop in to an excellent NFL starting quarterback. Belicheck has consistently shown the ability to draft and develop quality quarterbacks, not just with Brady but also with Matt Cassel, Jimmy Garrppolo, and Jacoby Brissett.

Love enters the NFL with a strong arm and solid accuracy. Though knocks on him do exist in terms of inconsistency in 2019 film versus previous seasons, and overall development as a quarterback. He also suffers from a lack of big games and quality opponents; playing at Utah State did not afford him significant opportunities to challenge that mindset.

But, he’s big (6-foot-4, 224 pounds) and mobile (4.74, 40-yard dash) and that makeup is hard to come by. Couple that with good arm talent and flashes of greatness on film, and some team will take a shot on him in the first round of the draft. That team could be the New England Patriots.
