4. Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe won’t solidify the middle

Evidently the Cowboys front office wasn’t able to get their hands on tape of the 2019 Carolina Panthers defense. If they had, they’d understand that the combination of McCoy and Poe isn’t the answer to any of their issues up front.

The idea of the pair working together makes sense. Poe is a big, space eater who can plug up the middle against the run. That should work well with McCoy given his desire to freelance in an effort to make plays in the opposing backfield.

Five years ago the duo would have been tremendous. The unfortunate reality is that age related regression has started to take its toll on their collective skills. Neither is anything other than an average NFL starter at this point in their respective careers.

That means the Cowboys will still be looking for players that can strengthen the interior of their defensive line all season long. McCoy and Poe won’t be horrible, but they won’t be good either. Opponents will find great success running the ball right at the Cowboys in 2020.
