Trey Burton to sign with the Colts, reunite with coach Frank Reich

Tight end Trey Burton is finally leaving the NFC and has agreed to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. The transaction will reunite Burton with Colts head coach Frank Reich.

Trey Burton is headed to Indianapolis.

Shortly after being released by the Chicago Bears, Burton is headed east. Burton has agreed to a one-year minimum deal that will have him inked to the Indianapolis Colts, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“He gets a 1-year deal worth the minimum… but he gets a total of $4M that’s already guaranteed from the #Bears,” Rapoport tweeted on Wednesday, April 22.

Burton spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before his two-year stint with the Chicago Bears. His production began to ramp up his third and fourth year in the NFL. Coincidently, that is when the Colts current head coach Frank Reich was the offensive coordinator of the Eagles.

The following year, Burton signed with the Chicago Bears, where he had a career year in 2018. Burton’s stat line include careers highs in catches (54), receiving yards (569) and touchdowns (six). He racked up those numbers playing with Chicago Bears then second-year quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

Burton took a step backwards in 2019. He saw limited action playing in eight games. That season Burton was plagued with injuries and attempted to play after surgeries to address his groin muscle. Ultimately, the Bears decided to cut ties with the tight end last week.

Now with the Colts, he will have the opportunity to play with veteran quarterback Philip Rivers. And if there is anyone who can help Burton resurrect his career, it would be Colts head coach Frank Reich.

With the Colts gearing up for a season seeking to be AFC contenders, the Bears may have done Burton a favor by cutting ties with him.
