Cowboys get steal of the draft in CeeDee Lamb
CeeDee Lamb should not have fallen to the 17th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and the Dallas Cowboys were the beneficiaries.
CeeDee Lamb was expected by many to be the first receiver off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft. Instead, he ended up being the third as the Dallas Cowboys made a big move to improve their passing game.
After Henry Ruggs III went 11th to the Las Vegas Raiders and his Alabama teammate Jerry Jeudy to the Denver Broncos with the 15th overall pick, it looked as if Lamb may face a long wait for the phone to ring.
However, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys did not hesitate to pounce and make him the 17th overall pick, adding the former Oklahoma Sooner to a receiving corps that already features Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.
That is a triumvirate that should terrify opposing defenses around the league.
Both Cooper and Gallup are coming off 1,000-yard seasons in 2019, and in Lamb the Cowboys are bringing in the most complete receiver in the draft.
There were some concerns over Lamb’s lack of experience against press coverage, while he was not considered as refined of a route-runner as Jeudy.
But between his body control at the catch point, his dominance in contested-catch situations and his incredible elusiveness in the open field, Lamb has the ideal skill-set to make an immediate impact in the NFL.
A YAC machine, Lamb averaged a remarkable 21.4 yards per reception in his final season with the Sooners.
He is unlikely to put up such numbers as a rookie in the pros, but lining up alongside Cooper and Gallup is a recipe for a productive first season, with defenses unlikely to be able to dedicate double coverage to any of the trio when they are all on the field.
Dak Prescott may still be waiting for his new contract, but with the steal of the draft joining him on the offense in 2020, he has even more ammunition with which to prove he is worthy of that huge payday.
