The Packers stunned everyone by trading up to pick 26 to draft Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. This is a move the organization will regret making.

Every year there’s a quarterback who kind of comes out of nowhere for NFL scouts to fall in love with and this year that was Jordan Love out of Utah State.

Love had a nice 2018 season for the Aggies, throwing for 3,567 yards, 32 touchdowns, and six interceptions while rushing for seven touchdowns.

Love’s final season, however, left a lot to be desired. In 2019 he had fewer passing yards (3,402), less touchdowns (20), and considerably more interceptions (17) and while he rushed for more yards, he didn’t find the end zone with his legs at all during his junior campaign.

Love probably could have bounced back if he had returned to school for the 2020 season, but with a high draft grade, why not enter the NFL Draft? He had been mocked in the late first round throughout draft season and when the Packers moved up and picked Love, it was a shocking turn of events and the draft drama we all wanted to see.

Simply put: The Packers didn’t need to make this pick.

Yes, Aaron Rodgers is closer to the end of his career than he is to the beginning, but the Packers had a lot of bigger needs in the 2020 NFL Draft. When they made the move up to pick 26, many assumed they’d go after a defensive stud or find a wide receiver, which would have made Rodgers extremely happy.

Now, however, Rodgers isn’t going to be happy and he’s not exactly the kind of guy who is going to mentor Love and teach him all of his tricks. That’s not Rodgers’ game. As Trey Wingo noted on the ESPN broadcast, Rodgers is now the same age Brett Favre was when the Packers took him in the 2005 NFL Draft, so it’s deja vu for the two-time MVP.

Going back to Love though, his decline from 2018 to 2019 is concerning and the fact that he was a first round pick is a bit surprising. He has the intangibles to be a good quarterback, but could have used another year at Utah State for polishing.

All this pick is going to do for the Packers is upset Rodgers and that’s sure to cause some division in the locker room. What if Rodgers gets injured and misses time, then Love comes in and plays well? The Packers would have to decide if they’re ready to move on from Rodgers sooner than they thought or who would continue to be their starter.

Green Bay made it to the NFC Championship Game this past season and quarterback wasn’t the reason they didn’t make the Super Bowl. Their run defense was absolutely gashed by the 49ers running backs and one would have thought a player like Patrick Queen would have been the better, more logical pick for the Packers at number 26.

Non-Packers fans are excited to see the drama start in Green Bay, as Rodgers is sure to voice his displeasure with this selection. Will it cause friction throughout the 2020 season?
