The Dolphins don’t want to move up to No. 3 to grab Tua Tagovailoa. They want to use that pick to convince the Bengals to part with Joe Burrow.

The 2020 NFL Draft is merely hours away, but there’s finally some intrigue surrounding the No. 1 overall pick. The Dolphins are deeply engaged in trade discussions designed to move up in the draft to make Joe Burrow their franchise quarterback of the present and future.

The crux of the idea is that the Dolphins would base a package around the No. 3 and No. 5 selections in this year’s draft to tempt the Bengals to give up the No. 1 overall pick. Obviously, that would require Miami to strike a deal with the Lions to obtain the third selection.

It’s unclear what Miami has at its disposal that might tempt the Lions to move off that selection if the No. 5 pick isn’t going to be involved. It would likely require the Dolphins to give up significant assets in this year’s draft while also moving 2021 Draft capital. That’s a hefty price for the team to pay, but it’s a worthwhile investment when you consider the upside of bringing Burrow to South Florida.

The real question to consider is whether or not the Bengals have any interest in letting Miami move up to the top spot in the draft. Cincinnati officials have been locked in to the idea of selecting Burrow for a long time. It would require a major trade offer to even get them to consider the possibility of changing directions so close to the start of this year’s draft.

The only realistic way the Bengals will consider making this trade is if the Dolphins make them a historic offer. The No. 3 and No. 5 picks can only be the starting point for a deal. Cincinnati should be asking Miami to include multiple future first round picks in the deal. Making that kind of trade might not thrill Bengals fans in the short-term, but it could be in the franchise’s best long-term interest.

Overall, the chances of the Dolphins getting this deal done are remote. There are simply too many hurdles to overcome in such a short span of time. The idea that it’s not impossible is news though. Miami officials will work feverishly for the next several hours to get this seismic deal done.
